Amit Midha, Dell's Greater China President, said that his company is scheduled to launch a seven-inch tablet in the next few weeks and a 10-inch tablet in around 6-12 months.

The company has joined in on the rush to release tablets among computer makers. Tablet PCs are smaller than laptops but bigger than mobile handsets. The announcement comes at the heels of the launch of the iPad five months ago. The Apple tablet has a 9.7-inch screen.

During an Oracle Corp. conference last week, Michael Dell, the company's chief executive, displayed a seven-inch device but declined provide a release date.

"It was showed off at Oracle World by Michael last week and we'll be launching very, very soon-within the next few weeks," Midha said, adding that his company is set to launch "a whole slew" of new products within the next 6-12 months, which includes additional three-inch, four-inch and 10-inch devices.

"In fact, very much in the near future we'll be launching the seven-inch tablet as well as the additional three-inch product," Midha said.

He confirmed that the seven-inch tablet would be based on the Android operating system from Google. He also said that some of the new units will be based on the Microsoft Windows operating system, however, he declined to name specific products that would run on the platform. Midha said that Dell is also considering the Google Chrome operating system for its products.
