Dean Smith became a YouTube sensation when his video showing how he spent a year to prepare for his marriage proposal went viral. Published on Jan. 18, the video titled “Best Marriage Proposal of 2015 (Warning: Will Make You Cry!) - 365 Day Engagement” has been viewed more than 16 million times.

For 365 days starting Jan. 8, 2014, Smith videotaped himself each day holding up a sign asking his girlfriend, Jennifer Kessel, to marry him. He merged the footage together in a 15-minute video package for her. Among the songs included in the video are Kanye West’s “Only One,” Bruno Mars’ “Marry You” and Pharrell’s “Happy.”

On Jan. 8, it was Kessel’s first time to watch the video on the beach in Aruba, where she celebrated her 26th birthday with her family and Smith. After watching the video, Smith finally popped the question to Kessel in person.

According to Smith, Kessel was a fan of proposal videos on YouTube. He told The Huffington Post that she would “tear up at the sincerity and thoughtfulness of each proposal.” After she showed several of the proposal videos to him, Smith decided that he wanted to “make her tear up to her own proposal.”

At the end of the video, Smith and Kessel both broke down into tears. Watch Smith’s 365-day proposal in the viral video titled “Best Marriage Proposal of 2015 (Warning: Will Make You Cry!) - 365 Day Engagement” here:
