“DC’s Legends of Tomorrow” Season 1 finale airs May 18 on The CW. Episode 16, titled “Legendary,” is expected to be action-packed with clues to what happens next in Season 2. Show boss Marc Guggenheim has recently talked about the penultimate episode, particularly the death that was instrumental to ending the Oculus and the Time Masters.

Spoiler alert: This update contains “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow” finale spoilers. Details include the finale episode synopsis from The CW. Watch the Legends 1x16 promo video below.

“After the numerous sacrifices the team has made since the beginning of this ride, Rip (Arthur Darvill) decides that it's time they each decide their own destiny and returns them to Central City a few months after they first left,” reads the Legends 1x16 synopsis.

After the Waverider trip back to present-day Central and Star cities, White Canary/Sara Lance (Caity Lotz) drowns in grief. She has just lost Leonard Snart a.k.a. Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller), and now she will learn from dad Quentin Lance (Paul Blackthorne) that her sister Laurel a.k.a. Black Canary (Katie Cassidy) is dead, too.

Captain Cold dies in Season 1, Episode 15, when he saves the rest of the team by making sure the Oculus is destroyed along with the Time Masters. Guggenheim has recently said there will be a ripple effect from this event that will have a “huge role” in “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow” Season 2.

Speaking to IGN, Guggenheim also explained the death of Wentworth Miller’s Captain Cold is partly because of the actor’s short-term deal with the series. The death is also from “a combination of a few things,” including the brilliant character development of Leonard Snart, from a selfish villain to a real, selfless, legendary hero.

Meanwhile, Hath-Set a.k.a. Vandal Savage (Casper Crump) is expected to go after Hawkman/Carter (Falk Hentschel) and Hawkgirl/Kendra (Ciara Renée) again, with intent to kill both. He is currently in the year 2166, moments after killing Rip’s wife and son (again).

Rip Hunter’s decision to send the rest of the team back to when they got on the Waverider for the first time is going to bring forth some emotional scenes. In the end, White Canary, ATOM/Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh), Heat Wave/Mick (Dominic Purcell), Firestorm/Jackson (Franz Drameh) and Firestorm/Stein (Victor Garber) are all expected to continue on with their fight against Savage.

Incidentally, Patrick J. Adams (of USA’s “Suits” series) is joining the cast from Legends 1x16. He will also appear in the first episode of ‘Legends’ Season 2.
