The colour of the urine could say a lot about a person’s health, says the Cleveland clinic. The colour of the urine can reveal a person’s state of health, including urinary tract infection, dehydration and sometimes early warning of a health issue. The colour of the urine also depends on the food and medicines taken by a person.

Human urine has been an effective diagnostic tool since the early days of medicine, said the clinic spokesman. He also added that the colour, density and the smell of the urine has a lot to reveal about a person’s health, reports Mirror.

If the urine is colourless or clear, it indicates that the person is overhydrated or he has ingested a diuretic. Diuretic is a substance that forces the body to get rid of water, also found in caffeinated drinks like coffee.

When the urine is pale yellow or straw coloured, it indicates that the person is well hydrated, and if the colour darkens deep from pale yellow, then it is a sign indicating a person to drink water. If the colour of the urine is amber or golden yellow, it indicates that there is no sufficient water in the body, in that case, it is necessary to take more than just a glass of water.

If a person’s urine is syrup or brown coloured, that might be indicating liver or kidney problems. Sometimes taking in rhubarb, aloe or fava beans and some medications like laxatives could be responsible for the colour. If the colour doesn’t change even after drinking lots of water, then there is a need for a consultation with the general physician.

Pink to red colour urine might be indicating prostate problems, kidney disease, urinary tract infections, kidney or bladder stones, and sometimes even cancer. On the lighter side, it could be because of consuming beetroot, blackberries, rhubarb or medicines containing senna.

Orange colour of the urine could be indicating dehydration or consumption of laxatives or coloured foods like carrot or foods rich in vitamin C. Eating asparagus or medications such as indomethacin, amitriptyline and cimetidine can lead to green-coloured urine and urinary tract infection in rare cases.

If the urine smells strong, it could be indicating some sort of infection or even because of eating certain foods, like asparagus. If the urine fizzes, then it could be of kidney problem or high protein intake in diet which is a sign to visit the doctor.
