Coles & Woolworths recall bread because of metal pieces inside

Two years after a federal court ordered Australian supermarket giant Coles to hang signs for three months that it passed off par-baked bread as fresh from the over, the grocer as well as competitor Woolworths and other stores are facing another bread problem. This time, it’s pieces of metal found inside more than a dozen bread products.

Besides the two supermarket giants, the affected bread are also sold at Metcash/IGA, corner stores and different food outlets across New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory, according to the NSW Food Authority’s recall notice. The list has 17 bread products, with best before date of Oct 2, 2016, including the six-pack White Rolls and six-pack Mighty Soft Hot Dog Rolls sold by Coles and six-pack Over Hamburger Roll sold by IGA Bakers, reports Sydney Morning Herald.

The metal pieces, if ingested, could cause injury, the authority warns. It adds that consumers should not eat the 17 bread products on its list. Those who have already eaten it should seek medical advice.

The affected bread were produced by Quality Bakers Australia, a brand owned by Australian food giant Goodman Fielder. The company, which apologised to consumers for the inconvenience, advised them to review date codes and contact its Consumer Advisory Centre on 1800 810 599 to get a full refund, reports 9News. Shoppers could also get a refund from the stores where they bought the bread products.
