Chris Hemsworth has recently shared a photo of himself on Instagram that shows the result of his extreme weight loss. The usually buff star, known for his role as “Thor,” is unrecognisable in the said photo. Hemsworth had to lose his muscles for his role as Owen Chase in the upcoming movie “In the Heart of the Sea." Some observers can’t help but notice that he looks a lot like Tom Hanks in the 2000 film “Cast Away.”

Here’s Chris Hemsworth’s new look for "In the Heart of the Sea."

Just tried a new diet/training program called "Lost At Sea". Wouldn't recommend it.. #IntheHeartoftheSea @zocothebodypro

Now, click here to see a photo of Tom Hanks in "Cast Away," which was posted on Now Magazine’s website.

Based on the photo, Hemsworth and Hanks really look similar. The only thing that is missing is “Wilson,” the volleyball which Hanks interacted with in “Cast Away." According to Entertainment Weekly, Hanks had to lose more than 50 pounds to play the role of Chuck Noland, a plane crash survivor who got stuck for years in an uninhabited island.

Hollywood celebrities have stunned their fans in the past with their shocking and rapid weight loss to get into the very skin of their movie characters. Aside from Hanks and Hemsworth, Christian Bale also lost more than 60 pounds to play the character of Trevor Reznik in the 2004 movie “The Machinist.” Chris Pratt, the funnyman from “Parks and Recreation,” shed 60 pounds to play Peter Quill/Star-Lord in “Guardians of the Galaxy.”

Other actors and actresses who lost weight for their roles are Matthew McConaughey in “Dallas Buyers Club,” Anne Hathaway (“Les Miserables”), Jake Gyllenhaal (“Nightcrawler”), Jonah Hill ( “21 Jump Street”), Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis ("Black Swan').

Hemsworth talked about his skinny look and how he felt like a supermodel while trying to lose weight.

“We kind of went insane, weighing ourselves every day,” Hemsworth told Entertainment Weekly.

“You’ve got 15 burly blokes on the sea and all we talked about was our diet, and who’d lost more weight, and who’s looking really skinny. It’s ridiculous!” the actor added.

News.com.au reports that "In the Heart of the Sea" director Ron Howard made the buff star work out every single day, even on shooting days. He wanted Hemsworth and the other actors in the film, such as “Spider-Man” star Tom Holland, Cillian Murphy and Ben Whishaw, to lose weight fast but in a safe manner.

“In the Heart of the Sea,” is said to be inspired by Herman Melville’s classic novel “Moby-Dick.” It is also based on Nathaniel Philbrick's book of the same name, which was released in 2000. Howard’s film also stars Brendan Gleeson as old Thomas Nickerson, Benjamin Walker as Captain George Pollard, Jr. and Michelle Fairley as Mrs. Nickerson. It will be released in Australia on Thursday, Dec. 3.
