Chelsea FC: Mourinho Keen On Keeping Petr Cech, Will Demand A Huge Sum If Shot-Stopper Opts Out

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho declared that he will do his best to retain the services of former first-choice goalkeeper Petr Cech, but will nevertheless be ready in case the worst case scenario happens – the 32-year-old leaving Stamford Bridge.

The former Rennes man has only made a total of 14 appearances, so far, in the ongoing campaign, either featuring in less significant matches or filling in for a rarely unfit Thibaut Courtois.

Cech is still one of the best shot-stoppers in the world and still has a lot of years in front of him. With the Portuguese boss opting to choose ‘future’ over ‘present’ (without saying that Courtois is not worthy as Blues no. 1), the Czech international has grown frustrated and will likely be moving elsewhere this coming summer.

In anticipation of that said day, Mourinho issued a gentle reminder to interested clubs that the Plzeň native will not come cheap.

“I don't think Petr is a guy to be persuaded,” said Mourinho.

“He doesn't let anyone persuade him.”

“I think he's very mature making what he feels is the best decision for him and his future. I will just wait, wishing his decision is to stay. That's my desire. I would like him very, very much to stay.”

“But I don't waste my time trying to persuade him because it's just his decision. If he tells me he wants to leave I will tell him my opinion, that he is one of the three best goalkeepers in the world, so huge money.”

Real Madrid, Arsenal, and Liverpool are, among others, closely linked with Cech. The Los Blancos are looking for a replacement for the declining Iker Casillas, while the Reds are eyeing on a legitimate world-class goalkeeper to take the place of failed experiment Simon Mignolet. While Wojciech Szczesny is a decent option between the sticks, the Gunners are rumoured to be wanting an upgrade that can help them realise their squad’s maximum potential.
