A classic gaming company is looking to join the current lineup of console developers next year with Coleco gearing itself to release a new console. A partnership with Retro Video Game Systems allowed Coleco to develop a gaming console that channels the early stages of gaming with the Coleco Chameleon.

As compared to the previous consoles released with the past years, the norm is for the hardware to have compact discs as a way to store games. The upcoming Coleco Chameleon, on the other hand, is taking a different road by bringing back the use of cartridges instead of compact discs.

Not much is known about the console yet but it is said to be a modernistic take on classic video game consoles like the Super Nintendo Entertainment System or SNES. The Coleco Chameleon is said to be able to play eight, 16 and 32-bit games. The reason for this is that these games have been gaining a huge fan base as of late with hit games like “Shovel Knight” and “The Binding of Isaac” leading the genre.

Another feature of the Coleco Chameleon is that it is easy to play. In fact, it will be developed as a plug and play console which requires no updates and patches whatsoever.

The device itself takes on a retro look by sporting a black housing with the logo being painted in neon colors. The console features a single button which could possibly be the power switch. There will also be 4 USB ports which could be for the console’s controllers.

The controller itself features basic inclusions like today’s controllers. It has Start and Select buttons, four function buttons, a D-Pad and two analog sticks.

The pricing and release date for the console is yet to be announced. However, the official Twitter account of Coleco said in a tweet that the console will be cheap and affordable.
