After his huge win over Puerto Rican rival Miguel Cotto, Mexican Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is open to the possibility that Floyd Mayweather will return to boxing and possibly have a rematch with the undefeated American, according to Alvarez’s promoter and former fighter Oscar De La Hoya.

“Well, we would be open to it - absolutely. I'm sure Canelo would love to he opportunity. Like I said right now, Canelo is the man right now,” De La Hoya, the head of Golden Boy Promotions, which has Alvarez under contract, stated to boxingscene.com.

“That's why I said we're fighting him in May and then fighting him in September - whether it's in Las Vegas or anywhere around the world, he is fighting in May and September. And you know, if Mayweather wants to fight him - we can discuss that in the future.”

Alvarez now holds the World Boxing Council (WBC) world middleweight title after his unanimous decision win over Cotto. Alvarez dominated the fight and won via judges’ scores of 118-110, 119-109 and 117-111.

Mayweather, who recently retired from the sport last September, is the man responsible for Alvarez’s lone loss in his career. Alvarez improved to 46-1-1 with 32 knockout wins after his win over Cotto but suffered that one loss against Mayweather in September of 2013 when the American won via majority decision, 117-111, 116-112 and 114-114.

In the post-match interview in the Cotto fight, Alvarez stated that he's ready to face Gennady Golovkin, one of the rising stars in the sport. An Alvarez vs Golovkin match-up is seen by many as a potential huge fight because of the attacking style of both fighters.

De La Hoya also recently called out Mayweather after his retirement saying that boxing is better with the “boring” American retiring from the sport.
