Activision and Treyarch have released the official Black Ops 2 trailer and it looks like COD gamers will jump to the future in the direct sequel to Call of Duty: Black Ops.

"The original Black Ops took place during the first Cold War," says Mark Lamia, the Studio Head of Treyarch, "I call it the first Cold War because the new Cold War hasn't happened - yet."

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 will take place in the year 2025 where the second Cold War is raging in the United States. Players will take on the role of David Mason, the son of Alex Mason, the protagonist of the first Black Ops game. The sequel is an epic tale that will span generations as gamers can also play as the elder Mason. Alex Mason becomes a playable character but only in flashbacks to the late 1980s where Alex Mason is in charge of igniting wars against Russia in such exotic locales like Nicaragua and Afghanistan.

Treyarch called on David Goyer scribe of such movies like The Dark Knight and Superman: Man of Steel to create the sequel's mysterious villain, Raul Menendez. Familiar characters from the first Black Ops game will also appear in the sequel including an aged Frank Woods who serves as a narrator in Black Ops 2. The Black Ops veteran who tackled Victor Kravchenko out a window, explains society's dependence on technology in the trailer and how this lead to the ongoing Cold War.

"Aside from the fact that I'm still alive, none of this surprises me," narrates Woods. "Technology is stronger, but we got weaker. We built computers, robots...whole unmanned armies and no one ever asked: What happens when the enemy steels the keys?"

The sequel will also emphasize player decisions and how they can impact the story. Key decisions will significantly change the narrative. Main squad members and villain's henchmen will live or die depending on the player's choices. And they won't be arbitrary choices either, as the player decisions can affect the game's outcome and if Raul Menendez will succeed with his plans or not.

Black Ops 2 will also feature Strike Force missions that can shape the outcome of the Cold War. The non-linear campaign missions exist within the single-player campaign's main story and the player's success with these missions will affect the game's overall story.

Over on the multiplayer side, Treyarch has confirmed that zombie mode is coming to Black Ops 2.

"If you like zombies, you're going to be really happy with what we're doing with Black Ops 2. It's our biggest, most ambitious zombies ever," Lamis said on a recent episode of Roll Call on the Call of Duty Elite TV Network. Zombie mode will be deeply integrated inside Black Ops 2.
