The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is recommending the filing of misdemeanor manslaughter charges against celebrity Caitlyn Jenner for her involvement in a fatal car crash earlier this year. In an interview with CNN, Det. Richard Curry said that the case will be forwarded to the district attorney next week.

The reality TV star, previously known as Bruce Jenner, was involved in a three-vehicle collision on the Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu on Feb. 7. Police reports say that Jenner, who was driving a Cadillac Escalade, rear-ended 69-year-old Kimberly Howe's Lexus, pushing the vehicle into oncoming traffic where it was hit head-on by a Hummer. Howe died at the scene.

Det. Curry told reporters that while the "I Am Cait" star was driving under the speed limit for the area, she was going at an unsafe speed given the road conditions at the time. He clarified, however, that Jenner did not commit "gross negligence." Speaking to Variety, he said that there is a "50/50" chance that she will be charged with misdemeanor manslaughter, which equates to a one-year sentence in county jail.

Jessica Steindorff, the owner of the Toyota Prius also involved in the multiple collision, and Howe's two stepchildren, Dana Redmond and William Howe, are seeking damages as well as compensation for Howe's death. Steindorff is asking for over US$25,000 (approximately AU$34,000), citing negligence. However, the police said her case will also be presented to the DA's office next week for driving with a suspended licence at that time.

While Jenner has gone public acknowledging the incident as a great tragedy, her camp has rejected the stepchildren's claims in a court filing. None of the parties involved have spoken up about the latest developments as of this writing.

Caitlyn Jenner is the 1976 Olympic decathlon champion and is the father of Kendall and Kylie Jenner. He is also the stepfather of "Keeping Up With The Kardashians" stars Kim, Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian. The car crash happened just months before Bruce came out in public to announce his gender transition.
