Authorities confirmed that 17 participants of the Mother’s Day parade in New Orleans have been wounded when gunmen open-fired on people marching on Mother’s Day Parade held Sunday, March 12. No fatalities have been reported as bystanders rushed to the aid of the victims, who suffered non-threatening bullet wounds.

The spokeswoman for the police, Remi Braden noted in a statement sent via email that the victims have already been given first aid and grazed as wounds were not life-threatening.

New Orleans Police Superintendent, Ronal Serpas noted that three or four people however, were sent to the hospital to undergo surgery. No details have been provided by the authorities as to the conditions of the victims, particularly those in need of surgical procedures.

According to the report by the Sydney Morning Herald, about 400 people participated in the Mother’s Day Parade when the incident took place. Almost half of the marchers, who were stretched in three to four blocks in the 7th Ward neighborhood, were in the vicinity of the shooting.

Most of the victims are from the second-line parade, which means participants are in “loose processions” and they are the ones dancing down the street, often called the “moving block parties.”

Three suspects were reportedly seen running from the scene, immediately after the shooting but no arrests have been made until Sunday afternoon. Bystanders were seen attending to the victims of the Mother’s Day Shooting.
