Oscar De La Hoya declared that Amir Khan will be able to give Floyd Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao a run for their money, contrary to popular view that the Brit is nowhere near the level of the latter champions.

The 28-year-old Bolton native had been promised to have a day with "Money" inside the ring in the past, but such dream fight never came to fruition. And De La Hoya believes that it's about time that Khan gets the break that he deserves.

"It really kind of rubs me the wrong way that Amir Khan has been promised fighting the likes of Mayweather and Pacquiao and it hasn't happened yet. After this fight, I would love to really put Khan with the very best," he told the Manchester Evening News.

"We're going to try to get Khan with either Manny Pacquiao or with Floyd Mayweather because that's what he deserves. Khan is at the perfect moment of his career fighting in the welterweight division."

There is, however, a "minor" hindrance in the way of the former Light Welterweight titleholder in the person of Devon Alexander, who is set to face him on Dec. 13 at the MGM Grand. An intense battle can be expected, as the American southpaw also wants to prove that he belongs in the top category of his weight class, but De La Hoya is convinced that Khan has the edge.

"Fighting in the welterweight division, Khan is a force to be reckoned with," he added.

"He is the type of fighter that if you put him up to the test, if you put him up against a Floyd Mayweather, you put him up against a Manny Pacquiao, don't be surprised that he wins."

"I truly feel that if he keeps winning, if he keeps on getting into these big fights that are promised, I really do feel that Khan can be one of the top fighters of all time. Amir Khan is a complete package."
