Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya has stated that a match between WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin is going to happen. However, a report has claimed that the boxer-turned promoter is avoiding a mandated Canelo vs Golovkin match to setup a rematch with retired boxer Floyd Mayweather, Jr.

The WBC has mandated the winner of Cotto vs Canelo match on Saturday (Sunday AEDT) to defend the title belt against Golovkin. De La Hoya, Alvarez’s promoter, has stated that a fight with Golovkin is “gonna happen,” although he will talk first with his fighter’s team and see what would be their next move. However, according to Robert Elmore of Boxing News 24, De La Hoya seems to avoid the inevitable.

“My spidey senses tell me Oscar is trying to maneuver around that mandatory bout,” Elmore wrote. “Enter Floyd Mayweather.”

Elmore noted that De La Hoya believes Mayweather is the only boxer that could bypass Alvarez’s mandatory bout against “GGG,” adding that “Pretty Boy” is champion emeritus, which means he would not have to fall in line to get a title shot against the Mexican middleweight. Elmore added that by doing putting up a Canelo-Mayweather rematch, it could buy De La Hoya some time until he figures out his next move for his prized fighter.

However, “Money” has stated he has no intentions of coming out of retirement to fight anyone, including Alvarez, whom Mayweather defeated via 12- round unanimous decision in 2014. "I retired from the game; I didn't let the game retire me,” Mayweather told Fight Hype. “ Canelo, you a good fighter, but you already know what it is when you face me, boy.”

Meanwhile, De La Hoya and Canelo have 15-days to negotiate with Golovkin or relinquish his middleweight title belt to the WBC and make the undefeated Kazakh the automatic champion.
