Floyd Mayweather in 2007
Boxer Oscar De La Hoya's remarks are interrupted as opponent Floyd Mayweather (R) flexes in front of him during a promotion for their upcoming title fight, at Union Station in Washington February 21, 2007. Oscar De La Hoya is willing to move the Canelo Alvarez fight on May 2, 2015 if the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao fight happens during Cinco de Mayo weekend. Anything less will mean that the Golden Boy Promotions president won’t budge and will be willing to go head-to-head against Mayweather if the American picks other fighters other than Pacquiao.

According to Rick Reeno of boxingscene.com, a fight between Mayweather and opponents like Miguel Cotto, who reportedly have been offered a Mayweather fight, or Amir Khan will “not intimidate Alvarez” in setting up his own fight date on coveted date May 2 and have the same fight day as the planned Mayweather fight. Cinco de Mayo is a week celebrated by Mexicans and the 24 year old Alvarez is from Juanacatlán, Jalisco in Mexico.

“If they make Mayweather-Pacquiao, then there is going to be change of date - and we will do it out of respect for the fans. People have been waiting for [that fight for] the past seven years, but if it's Mayweather with Cotto or Mayweather with Khan, then we'll see,” De La Hoya said in the article. “We have many options. We'll speak with HBO to determine if it's going to be an event on HBO Pay-Per-View or [regular] HBO. We will be moving the pieces in the coming days.”

The popular demand is the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight but Mayweather can choose to run away from this fight again. Mayweather also believes that he is the major draw in any fight that a bout with either Cotto or Khan or other boxers will still give him enough money to leave Pacquiao. The latest in the negotiations is that Pacquiao have already signed off on the deal but Mayweather has yet to put his signature. Mayweather has already beaten Cotto from Puerto Rico two years ago while the fight with Khan has already been discussed in the last two years. For Alvarez, he also has other options like a rematch against Erislandy Lara, Cornelius Bundrage or Demetrius Andrade, the other contenders in the super welterweight division. He can also find fight at catchweight in the lower weight divisions against Kell Brook or Keith Thurman.
