Joe Wright’s Mega Budget “Pan” has crashed at the box office, adding another debacle to Warner Brothers’ miserable run at the box office. “Pan,” which was made with a budget of USD 150 million (AUD 204.5 million), was released in over 3,515 theatres in North America, and it reportedly grossed just USD 15.5 million (AUD 21.7 million) over the weekend.

“Pan” managed to earn only USD 20.5 million (AUD 27.6 million) in its opening weekend, according to The Hollywood Reporter. And its international collection from 52 markets was mere USD 40.6 million (AUD 55.10 million). Warner Brothers is staring at another huge loss if in the coming weeks, “Pan” fails to do good business internationally. So far “Pan” has done well in Latin America, U.K., Australia, where the film released on Sep.24, but it is struggling in Europe. China is a market that can make a difference for “Pan” and its makers, where the film opens on Oct. 22.

Wright’s Peter “Pan” origin tale failed to lure the audience despite mega budget and huge star cast, including Hugh Jackman, Rooney Mara, Garrett Hedlund. And with this film too failing to light up the box office, there seems to be no end to worries for Warner Brothers. This year the studio has incurred a huge loss, as both “Jupiter Ascending” and “The Man from U.N.C.L.E” failed to do good business.

Ridley Scott’s “The Martian,” on the other hand, continues to impress, holding strong in its second weekend. This Matt Damon starrer collected USD 37 million (AUD 50.37 million) from 3,854 locations, seeing a decline of only 32 per cent from its opening weekend. It has grossed USD 108.7 million (AUD 148.76 million) at the domestic box office. The red planet saga is having a dream run in the overseas market as well.

Meanwhile, “Pan” is not the only high profile movie that failed to make an impression at the box office. Robert Zemeckis’ “The Walk,” which opened at more than 2,515 locations, grossed only USD 1.6 million (AUD 2.1 million). The critically-acclaimed film failed to compete with the early releases like “The Martian” and “Hotel Transylvania” at the box office. “The Walk” recorded the lowest nationwide start for Zemeckis.
