“The Blacklist” Season 3 will pick up on the predicament that Elizabeth “Liz” Keen (Megan Boone) and Raymond “Red” Reddington (James Spader) were in during the Season 2 finale titled “Tom Connolly.” This means that they will still be trying to get out alive. An exclusive first trailer was also presented by NBC. [Spoiler alert!]

Liz is running from the FBI, the Cabal, as well as her own task force after she killed the U.S. attorney general during the last season’s final episode. Red will be aiding her throughout the ordeal.

“What I’m discovering is that while it’s really entertaining and Red is still this very colourful character, we’re not taking this [situation] very lightly. The first step is just to get out alive,” Boone said in a report by Entertainment Weekly.

Executive producer Jon Bokenkamp said that the tone of the upcoming season will be more urgent. It will be a manhunt and the stakes will be greater. He also hinted that there will be huge changes, including Liz’s appearance.

Liz will reportedly look more like her mother, according to Boone. She will be shown having blonde hair and will be transforming into a woman who used to be only a mystery to her.

Executive producer John Eisendrath shared that Liz used to live in a perfect environment and had a secure job and a husband. However, she has been forced into a very uncomfortable and dark situation with Reddington. It was said that she may actually discover some similarities between herself and Reddington that she might refuse to accept. Although the focus of the show will be Red and Liz’s relationship, the stories of other characters will also be told throughout Season 3.

Eisendrath added that the manhunt configuration of the show will allow other characters to develop and feature their background and experiences more. Ressler (Diego Klattenhoff) will have a new leadership position in the international manhunt, and he will clash with Aram (Amir Arison), who will not be too keen on capturing his friend Liz, Entertainment Weekly notes.

In the upcoming season, the characters will have opposing positions, but each will know where the other is coming from, which, according to Eisendrath, is a rare situation. The irony of Liz running from the same task force that she used to belong to provides an intriguing dynamic.

“The Blacklist” Season 3 is set to premiere on Thursday at 9 pm ET on NBC.
