“When Reddington links an elegant, powerful and extremely dangerous woman to the recent tragic events, the task force is forced to play a deadly cat and mouse game to stop her before she strikes again,” stated the episode synopsis.

In the previous episode, the team held a funeral for Liz and began searching for the person responsible for her demise, Carter Matt writes. The episode also provided the foundation for the momentous final events as the season comes to a close. It could serve as an introduction for a potential spin-off of the show.

Famke Janssen will play Susan “Scottie” Hargrave in the next episode, a woman known to be very dangerous and a history with Tom. Her name may only be a codename or a fake identity to mask her real purpose and status. In the promo clip, Susan was described as the single person who could go toe-to-toe with Red. She may even turn out to be Liz’s mother, Katarina Rostova.

Hargrave was briefly covered in the past episode when Tom took a photo from a security footage of her talking to Cynthia Panabaker (Deirdre Lovejoy) and Cooper (Harry Lennix). Tom thought that she was Liz’s mother and was coming after her daughter.

Episode 20 also hinted that Katarina Rostova is actually alive and has returned. The woman believed by Tom to be Liz’s mother will finally meet Red in person and they will have a lot to talk about after having been separated for many years. In the video, Red told Hargrave that Liz is dead, which means that she is, too.

In the promo video, Tom told the taskforce that their mission will be about avenging Liz’s death. The team may act beyond the limits of the law to get back at the people who abducted Liz. If they resort to such measures, it will not be the first time that the team acts in such a manner. Tom may even accept the dark aspect of himself so he can be a good father to baby Agnes.

“The Blacklist” Season 3 Episode 21 will air on May 5 on NBC in the US. It also airs on Channel Seven in Australia.
