Chances of a “Big Little Lies” season 2 happening are getting stronger. Author Liane Moriarty has revealed that she is working on some storylines for two characters in the show.

The HBO miniseries is based on Moriarty’s 2014 novel of the same title, adapted for TV by screenwriter David E. Kelley. The adaptation wraps up where the book ends. However, the Australian author revealed that the show’s producers have asked her to come up with ideas on how they can bring back the HBO drama for another season.

Moriarty admitted that although the story of the characters ended in her book, she can still pen another narrative just for the TV show without writing another novel. Moriarty added that she could focus on Bonnie (Zoe Kravitz) and Celeste’s (Nicole Kidman) lives should season 2 push through.

"The obvious thing is, first of all, I think we could bring in more of Bonnie's story from the book. And also what happens next [for Celeste] … She's still grieving for the end of a terrible relationship and I think that would be a really interesting thing to explore. So there's a whole lot of different storylines," she told Sydney Morning Herald.

The novelist admitted that she wasn’t expecting Bonnie’s backstory to be given less screen time. She added that she has no idea why the backstory of Kravitz’s character was left out.

"My original reaction was what have they done? How have they left that out? But a lot of people have said that they could tell [what was Bonnie's true story], there had been little hints and that you can take that away. It's implied in her performances and some little lines. I think I might have preferred to have had it in there but I wouldn't argue against it either. It also leaves open the possibility of season two," she added.

On whether or not the cast is interested to come back for another season, Moriarty is optimistic that they are. Kidman and Reese Witherspoon (Madeline) had said that they are eager to do another season. During a Facebook Live edition, the actresses even urged fans to convince Moriarty to come up with season 2.

Director Jean-Marc Vallée, however, said that the show is only good for just one season and that he is not keen on doing another. Vallée admitted, though, that he would love to work with Witherspoon, Kidman and the rest of the cast again.

“Big Little Lies” released its final episode last April 2. It was aired on Showcase in Australia.
