American sitcom "The Big Bang Theory" (CBS) is a show about nerds and "a girl next door." The nerds are as fun as some regular guys, and the girl next door kills spiders for them and teaches them how to fish.

Sheldon (Jim Parsons), Penny (Kaley Cuoco), Leonard (Johnny Galecki), Howard (Simon Helberg) and Rajesh (Kunal Nayyar) are the first five characters in the show. Howard later fell in-love with and married Bernadette (Melissa Rauch). Sheldon was compelled to meet Amy (Mayim Bialik) in a blind date, and she is now his girlfriend. Leonard and Penny are a couple (again, for now), and Rajesh calls himself a metrosexual who will forever agonize over the fact that Sheldon has a girlfriend and he doesn't.

The writers have done a great job in developing their first five characters; those who watch the show - even the non-geeks - are able to identify with them. Together, the five of them come tenth in a list of "10 Cool Reasons to Watch TBBT."

Why watch the "The Big Bang Theory?"

10. Characters' idiosyncrasies. Everyone has their own flavor of weirdness, and comedy happens when these flavors blend and clash. The stars do a great job in presenting their characters.

9. Watch cool scientists take a stab at acting. See Sheldon Cooper play a Zynga game with world-renowned scientist Professor Stephen Hawking. Watch Hawking ask: "What do Sheldon Cooper and black holes have in common?"

8. Talk comics and network games. See Sheldon's encounter with Stan Lee. Listen to Rajesh contemplate the title of Lee's works and hear his thoughts about "Eat, Pray, Love." Catch some action and commentary about network games, too.

7. Wil Wheaton. It's always fun when he guest stars as himself on the show. It was more fun when Sheldon still hated him.

6. Robots and other experiments. Howard is a Martian rover engineer whose pick up line goes, "Do you want to drive on Mars?" Once, they joined a competition involving robots. Not exactly "Real Steel," but somehow it was more fun.

5. Cosplays. Lots of cosplays. Find out why Rajesh says Aquaman sucks. See the whole gang in various cosplays - even when it's not Halloween or Comic-Con season.

4. Sheldon Cooper. He is not crazy, his mother had him tested. You'd think he's impossible, because that's what one would normally say. But he'd tell you, "I think what you meant to say is, 'I give up; he's improbable.'"

3. Penny. She's not the glue that holds the gang together, but she definitely changed the guys' lives. We still don't know her surname.

2. Have a good laugh. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to have fun with this bunch of weirdos.

1. Good writing. The show is now on its sixth season, but ratings remain strong. The material has a lot to do with it. Over 19 million viewers (second highest of the show ever) saw the episode last week about flirting and sexual harassment.
