Jeremy Irons, who is playing Bruce Wayne’s trusted butler Alfred Pennyworth in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” has said that his character is “completely different” from the previous versions of Pennyworth, portrayed by different actors over the years on big and small screen . He added that his Pennyworth is a reincarnation.

“[Zack] Snyder…wanted to create a completely different Alfred. So I felt I didn’t have to carry any baggage from previous ones. It’s sort of a reincarnation if you’d like,” he said to Toronto Sun, adding that he has come up with his own version of Pennyworth, and his character is capable of taking a decision based on his own desires.

In the “Dark Knight” trilogy, it is Michael Caine who played Pennyworth, the caretaker of Batman who encourages Wayne to transform into Batman and fight evil. He stands by Wayne through thick and thin.

It is not known if Irons’ Pennyworth has imbibed the same traits as Caine’s version and will be shown as Wayne’s greatest support, as Irons did not reveal more details about his character.

In the comics, Pennyworth is a loyal butler who raises Wayne after the death of his parents, Thomas Wayne and Martha Wayne. He becomes Wayne’s confidante and helps keep his Batman identity as secret. The character has been depicted as someone who is cynical and has a sarcastic tone. Pennyworth and Wayne’s conversations are laced with humour. Created by Bob Kane, Bill Finger and Jerry Robinson have created the character, Pennyworth made his first appearance in comic “Batman” No.16

Meanwhile, Jesse Eisenberg, who is playing Lex Luthor in the film, also talked about his character to The Observer. He is playing the most “advantageous” role of his life, he said, adding that his character is “more of a stretch.”

“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” is centred on Batman who goes to Metropolis to keep Superman in check. The two superheroes fight each other while a common enemy make plans to wreck havoc on mankind.. Snyder has directed the film from the screenplay by Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder.
