Electric Hair Shaver

Inspired by a childhood trip to the barbers with his grandfather in Greece, Vellios, a formally trained hairdresser and self-taught barber, fulfilled his dream of opening his own gentleman's barber shop five months ago and has turned it into a successful male grooming and shaving business with customers now waiting up to three to four weeks for an appointment to see him. The razor and shaving cream has gone down southward for many men, from the face to the groin area. This has given rise to the term “manscaping” which refers to total or partial removal of pubic hair among men either as a personal grooming choice or part of the work in the case of underwear models.

A new study by Swiss researchers, published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine, found that 105 women who rated the characteristics of a good-looking penis ranked pubic hair second, after general cosmetic appearance, reports the New York Mag.

The length of the male genital ranked only sixth, belying the common perception that “size matters” a lot to most women, the study found. Before length came penile skin, penile girth and shape of glans. Scrotum appearance, and position and shape of the meatus or the urethra followed length.

The study was not made to help casting directors select men for nude photo shots or porn films but to help males who are suffering from distal hypospadias – a disorder that renders the urethra on the underside of the penis – and need to correct it by undergoing surgery on their genital. Many males in that situation worry about the impact of the procedure on the appearance of their manhood.

Mensfitness.com lumps manscaping with mannies, mandals and other similar terms that “coerce men into activities” they would be inclined to avoid. However, some men are just really hirsute, and while the Swiss study points to the importance that females place on pubic hair in men, women also “don’t want a man that looks like he crawled out of a cave.”

Craig Whitely, owner of themenroom.com and The Grooming Concierge, said since controlling body hair not only improves looks but also boosts male confidence, manscaping is considered healthy for men to consider. He said many men are now incorporating a trim down under as part of their grooming regimen.

Whitely’s tips for men who want to try manscaping includes saving the stubble down there, pulling the skin tight when shaving the nether region and having someone else do your lower back hair. Finally, for those who also want to include chest hair, his recommendation is shave it while in the shower. But for men with unsteady hands or want experienced hands to do the job, the better option is go to professional manscapers whose number are – forgive the pun – on the rise.
