The second annual Azerbaijan Grand Prix will emanate from Baku City Circuit in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Sunday. Last year, the street circuit made its debut on the Formula One calendar and saw retired world champion Nico Rosberg drive his Mercedes to a dominating victory after leading from start to finish.

This year, Mercedes are once again in prime position to take the chequered flag as Lewis Hamitlon starts on pole ahead of teammate Valtteri Bottas, Kimi Raikkonen, Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen. Hamilton is just 12 points behind championship-leader Vettel, who finished in fourth place at the Canadian Grand Prix on June 11. With another victory on Sunday, Hamilton could overtake Vettel in the championship tally.

With Ferrari evidently backing Vettel as the No. 1 designated driver, it's highly likely that the German is strategically allowed to overtake teammate Raikkonen for a podium finish. By doing so, Vettel would still remain No. 1 on the FIA World Championship table regardless of Hamilton's potential victory in Baku.

In what is a two-horse race, Ferrari (222 points) and Mercedes (214 points) have split the seven races in the 2017 Formula One season thus far. While Hamilton claimed the chequered flag for Mercedes at China, Spain and Canada, teammate Bottas won his career first Grand Prix in Russia during the final week of April. Vettel led Ferrari to victory in Australia, Bahrain and Monaco while Raikonnen has yet to win a race.

During Saturday's qualifying session, Hamilton dominated Q1 and Q2 before a less than great third sector in Q3 which allowed teammate Bottas to claim the fastest lap. But Hamilton and Bottas (1:41:274) proved quick enough and finished comfortably ahead of Red Bull's Verstappen (1:42:261) and the two Ferrari cars.

Hamilton finished with a fastest lap of 1:40.593. "We were struggling yesterday (Friday's practice session) but we made a lot of changes overnight. A big thank you to the team who stayed late last night to get the car to where it is today -- they did a fantastic job," Hamilton told reporters after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix Qualifying session.

Teammate Bottas isn't willing to play second-fiddle to his teammate, a former three-time World Champion. "It's disappointing to lose pole as that was the target today. But what I'm most proud of today is the huge effort the team put in overnight to switch on the car. We were quite lost on Friday but we made some changes and turned the weekend around. Going into the race we have a fantastic starting position and I'm expecting a good fight with Lewis."

After the stop in Baku, the 2017 Formula One season will move to the Red Bull Ring or the Austrian Grand Prix between Jul 7th-9th. It will be followed by the British Grand Prix (July 14th-16th) at Silverstone Circuit a weekend later. F1 Live Streaming and Azerbaijan Grand Prix Live streaming info follows.
