In a tweet on Dec 7, rocker Avril Lavigne told fans that she was not feeling well and asked for prayers. She did not disclose what health issue she was grappling then but told People that being sick was depressing and she was scared for her life.

On Monday, Avril disclosed that she has Lyme Disease, reports ABC. She told People that she started to feel ill in April, however, doctors said she was probably dehydrated and tired from tours. But her symptoms worsened as months passed.

The 30-year-old singer believes she was bitten by a tick in spring that caused her to be bedridden for five months. “I had to fight. I had doctors tell me I was crazy and they didn’t want to test me. I had to learn about it completely on my own,” Lavigne said.

Lyme Disease was named after Lyme in Connecticut where an unusually large number of children were diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis in 1975. It is a bacterial infection transmitted by a tick, according to WebMD.

Its symptoms include a peculiar skin rash just before developing arthritis symptoms. Other ailments that could arise from Lyme’s Disease are heart, brain and nerve problems.

During that time, her mother stayed with Avril in her Ontario house, while the singer’s husband, Nickelback singer Chad Kroeger, pitched in when he didn’t have tours. Her ailment caused Avril to have difficulty breathing that she found it difficult to stand up and even brush her teeth.

Lavigne believes she is 80 percent recovered through changing her diet and regular exercise. She stopped taking sugar, dairy and gluten. She also tried to walk or swim daily and meditated and did yoga.

She said the experience made her aware of what she wants in life, which are health, family, love and happiness.
