The Avengers will face the menace of the villain Thanos in the Phase 3 film in Marvel's Cinematic Universe. Thanos will reportedly finally unleash his evil force in "Avengers: Infinity War." The villain will pose such a "big threat" in "Avengers: Infinity War," so much so that the film will reportedly be split into two sequels.

Marvel Studios Production President Kevin Feige was present during the reveal of the entirety of Phase 3 of Marvel's Cinematic Universe on Oct. 28. According to Screenrant, a special screening for press and fans were held at El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles, where Marvel unveiled nine films under Phase 3. Leading the list is the previously confirmed release of the "Winter Soldier" sequel, which is now officially titled "Captain America: Civil War." The said movie will be released in May 2016. Phase 3 will reportedly culminate in a two-part sequel with "Avengers: Infinity War."

According to writer Rob Keyes, the unveiling of "Avengers: Infinity War" builds upon the foundation set in the films to date and what's still to come from Marvel Studios in theaters (and on TV) over the next several years. The trailer (video below) reportedly "confirms recent reports of 'The Avengers' 3 & 4 tying together and launching an even bigger event."

This event has now been confirmed as the "big threat" the Avengers will face when they battle against Thanos in "Avengers: Infinity War Part 1" on May 4, 2018. Another "epic film" will see the superheroes defeat the villain in "Avengers: Infinity War Part 2" on May 3, 2019. Kevin Feige was quoted to have described the unveiling of the final Phase 3 movie as "one massive cinematic event."

Apparently, Marvel Studios had clearly already laid out plans for the "event" since the 2008 movie "Iron Man" started its fan base. "We've always had a plan since Nick Fury broke into Tony Stark's house and told him he's part of a bigger universe. 'Avengers: Infinity War' Part 1 is the beginning of the culmination of everything that has come before," Kevin Feige said, as quoted by Screenrant.

It's still uncertain how "Avengers: Infinity War" will culminate Phase 3 of Marvel's Cinematic Universe. According to io9, the movie could end with a "lot of death." This is supposedly hinted in the trailer (12:03 time mark) where Thanos is seen already in possession of all six infinity gems for his Infinity Gauntlet.
