The hype surrounding “Avengers 4” has seen yet another spike in talks after “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” star Zoe Saldana recently let slip on what might have been the title of the fourth “Avengers” film. At the UK premiere of her recent Marvel release, Saldana discussed filming plans for the upcoming “Avengers: Infinity War.” Speaking to Lizo Mzimba of BBC News, Saldana was later caught referring to the fourth “Avengers” film as “Gauntlet,” thus implying that such would be the title of the upcoming movie. However, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” director James Gunn was quick to amend such statements, claiming that “Infinity Gauntlet” is not the title of the fourth “Avengers” flick.

“It’s not the title,” Gunn told Yahoo Movies regarding Saldana’s apparent revelation and how it was ultimately incorrect. “My guess is that Zoe just misspoke. I’ll talk to Zoe today, but I would imagine that is just Zoe misspeaking and saying ‘Infinity Gauntlet’ instead of ‘Infinity War.’”

On one hand, this may be Gunn covering up for the actress. But on the other hand, ‘Gauntlet’ may actually be a codename for the still untitled “Avengers” movie. After all, Marvel head Kevin Feige has been rather secretive regarding the film’s name, as to reveal such would pose as a spoiler for the movie altogether. To have a name such as “Infinity Gauntlet” would be seen as no threat to the film’s plot, especially since many fans have already been well-versed on the actual Infinity Gauntlet in the Marvel world.

As some may be aware, the Infinity Gauntlet is designed to hold the Infinity Stones of which several have already been referenced in other films within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). It is already expected that Thanos, portrayed by actor Josh Bolin, will be wielding the Gauntlet at some point or another in the MCU, so for the fourth “Avengers” film to be called “Infinity Gauntlet” might seem a little too anti-climactic for it to be a final working title. As such, it is speculated that Saldana’s slip of the tongue should be taken for what it is: a mistake with no underlying meaning whatsoever.

While “Avengers 4” is slated for a release in 2019, with “Avengers: Infinity War” hitting theatres a year prior, Saldana’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” has already premiered as of April 25. The actress portrays Gamora opposite Chris Pratt as Peter Quill/Star-Lord. The film also stars Dave Bautista as Drax, Vin Diesel as Baby Groot and Bradley Cooper as Rocket.
