Geoffrey Rush deserves a big note to himself for being hailed as a finalist for 2012 Australian of the Year Award.

This grouse actor and mentor of the performance arts has been given his much deserve honour for his lifetime achievements on stage and the big screen. His passionate commitment to contributing to the Aussie art world includes teaching the next generation of Australian artists.

When it comes to awards, his cupboard is simply overwhelming with an Oscar, Tony, Emmy, two Golden Globes, three British Academy Film Awards, four SAG, and several AFI; not to forget the Helpmann Award which placed him among the most elite performing artists of the country.

Getting the big break in the industry was not that easy for Rush himself with his overseas career soaring off when he was already in his 40s. It was that time when he won his Oscar award for the movie 'Shine.'

But it was with his interest in supporting the Australian movie and theatre industry that he earned the respect of many. He was the mentor behind the successful careers of Cate Blanchett and other young artists who want to make it big in the acting world, not just for the money but for the enhancement of the craft.

Other awardees like Rush include Dr. Nouria Salehi, who is honoured with the Victorian Senior Australian of the Year for her medical and voluntary achievements for Afghanistan and Australia.
