Team Australia and Team USA will resume their rivalry in the quarterfinal of the Davis Cup starting Friday at the Pat Rafter Arena in Brisbane, Australia. The match-up features the two most successful countries in Davis Cup history. The U.S. (32) and Australia (28) have won a combined 60 Davis Cup championships.

In recent years, the two Davis Cup giants have been starved of success. While the Americans haven't won the sport's premier international team event since 2007, the Aussies haven't prevailed since 2003. Both countries have enjoyed an easy ride to the quarterfinal stage. In February, Team USA eased past a Switzerland team without Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka, while Team Australia put away a Czech Republic team sans World No. 13 Tomas Berdych.

Team USA, captained by Jim Courier, will be spearheaded by in-form World No. 15 Jack Sock. The rest of the roster includes World No. 23 John Isner, World No. 25 Sam Querrey and World No. 29 Steve Johnson. Team Australia, meanwhile, will be heavily reliant on World No. 16 Nick Kyrgios. There's no other top-30 player on the Australian roster; World No. 78 Jordan Thompson is captain Lleyton Hewitt's next best option.

Davis Cup: Nick Kyrgios to face John Isner on Friday

The quarterfinal will kick off with one-on-one matches between Sock and Thompson, followed by a showdown between Isner and Kyrgios. Thereafter, the countries will play a doubles set on Saturday and a reverse singles on Sunday. The eventual winner will square off with either Italy or Belgium in the Davis Cup semi-finals in September.

Isner holds a 2-1 career record against Kyrgios but the Australian is confident going into Friday's quarterfinal. “I played him last year and feel pretty confident with this match-up. I feel comfortable playing second (after the Sock vs Thompson match). You don’t’ get too many looks at his serve but you take care of our own (serve) and you get some looks. That’s what I did in Atlanta. It’s good for Thommo to start first. He did that last time against (in his Davis Cup debut in February against Czech Jiri Vesely) and proved he can deal with the pressure pretty well," Kyrgios said on Thursday, via The Courier Mail.

The American is hoping for a five-setter due to Kyrgios' tendency to crumble under pressure during lengthy matches. “It can be a good thing if our match goes to five sets. It’s another thing that makes Davis Cup special -- its best out of five, like you have at a Grand Slam. Generally over best-of-five on the day the better player will win. It’s a truer form for the format," said Isner, who lost his most recent match-up against Kyrgios at the Atlanta Masters last year.
