After eight long years, Australia’s popular announcer Adam Spencer has decided that it is time to “bring down the microphone” and say goodbye to his hundreds of thousands of morning listeners on ABC’s 702.

In a “farewell” article Spencer wrote and published by abc.net.au, Spencer takes a look back at his journey on air, when he began as what he described himself to be a “very nervous 'ex-triple j radio announcer'” as he made his “foray into breakfast on 702” on February 20, 2006. He was then 37.

It was a journey that he said that was worth taking.

“On 20th February 2006 - me, a then just turned 37 year old naive, wet behind the ears, very nervous 'ex-triple j radio announcer' - made my first foray into breakfast on 702,” Adam Spencer said in his article, describing his early job as, “Wishing everyone a good morning whilst genuinely wondering if I had the ability to do the show.”

And after hundreds of “mornings” after, Adam said, he knew it is time to go.

“ Well today, over 1,500 'good mornings' later, the same 'me', pushing 45, a lot less wet behind the ears, much less nervous, a bona fide 702 Breakfast announcer, is taking the chance to tell you that at the end of this year, I'll be hanging up the headphones for the last time, to let someone else take over what I feel to be the best job, in the best city in the world,” he said.

He admitted that he thought he would see 2014 at a different light, noting that he himself was surprised to throw the towels.

Spencer said, “In my dreams, early 2014 sees me kicking back on a beach with Sir Alex Ferguson, David Beckham, Barbara Walters and Ricky Ponting. Needless to say, I'm the one carrying the towels!”

For the job that he loves so much and for the station that he now considers his home, leaving is not an easy one.

“That part of the job I won't miss - but what I will miss is you guys. The daily interaction with 702 listeners. You never cease to amaze me with your honesty, brains and lovable feistiness. Your ability to make up your minds for yourself and not demand your radio announcer tell you what to think. That I will miss,” Spencer added.
