After making her film debut earlier this year in “Hail, Caesar,” Sydney-born actress Natasha Bassett gears up to portray controversial music icon Britney Spears.

Lifetime announced that it is set to release the pop star’s biopic simply titled “Britney” in 2017. The network’s revelation comes days before the 34-year-old singer drops her comeback album “Glory” on Friday. Bassett will play the title role of the two-hour film, which centres on what is described as Spears’ “tumultuous true story.”

In addition to “Hail, Caesar,” Bassett was known as Chloe of NBC’s comedy drama television series “Camp.” She also appeared in other TV shows including “Rake,” “In Your Dreams” and “Wild Boys.” The 23-year-old actress is in for a challenging role in “Britney,” which follows Spears’ career back when she was still a young girl from Louisiana, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The TV film will also touch on her relationship with former Mickey Mouse Club co-member turned boyband star turned solo artist Justin Timberlake. It will also delve into Spears’ marriages with Jason Alexander and Kevin Federline. Fans can also expect that the biopic won’t shy away from showing the singer’s epic fall from grace and her resurrection.

“With her life spiralling out of control, Britney hit rock bottom, lost custody of her sons and was placed under her father's conservatorship,” Lifetime described the film, according to Digital Spy. “But despite her past troubles, Britney has battled back to rebuild her career to its former glory, proving to everyone that she's a timeless force in entertainment.”

Britney really seems to be back – apart from her upcoming album launch, she is set to make a guest appearance on CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” for his highly popular segment Carpool Karaoke. It has been nearly a decade since her disastrous VMA performance, when she struggled to entertain with her hit song “Gimme More.” Spears’ fans hope that in the upcoming show, she’d upstage her infamous 2001 VMA show-stopper, a live rendition of “I’m a Slave 4 U” [watch below].
