Michael Fassbender is all set to launch another action-fantasy movie franchise that has the “big budget” tag. The first trailer of “Assassin’s Creed” has been released online and fans of the insanely popular game series are hoping that the movie will be as good as the game.

“Assassin’s Creed” the video game has reportedly sold more than 91 million units worldwide. Apart from Fassbender, who plays Callum Lynch, the movie also stars Marion Cottilard, Ariane Labed, Michael Kenneth Williams, Brendan Gleeson and Jeremy Irons among others. The movie has been directed by Australian director Justin Kurzel. He has previously worked with Fassbender and Cottilard in “Macbeth.”

Previously, fans found video game adaptations, such as that of Prince of Persia, Silent Hill, Resident Evil and Tomb Raider, mostly disappointing. However, 2010’s “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” grossed US$336.4 million (AU$460 million), the highest grossing video game adaptation till date. Fans are hoping that “Assassin’s Creed” will break the video game movie jinx and surpass “Prince of Persia.”

While the teaser of “Assassin’s Creed” does not give away much, viewers do get a glimpse of how Fassbender and Cottilard will look like in the movie. Those who have not played the video game won’t find it difficult to connect, as the movie is not very heavily based on the game, although it is set in the same universe game fans are familiar with.

“I spent most of my time with the story and the real history. That was my main focus – not so much forensically going through every aspect of the game. It was: How do you make this into a piece of cinema?” Kurzel told Los Angeles Times.

“Assassin’s Creed” will be released in Australian theatres on Dec. 26. If the movie works, it will setup a franchise for Fassbender as actor-producer.

Fassbender is popularly known as Magneto (Erik Lehnsherr) in the X-Men universe. “X-Men: Apocalypse” will be released next week. In the past three years, Fassbender has received two Oscar nominations for “Steve Jobs” and “12 Years A Slave.”
