The film, which recounts the tale of two indigenous teenagers living in central Australia who fall in love with one another, claimed an incredible 6 awards at the IF Awards last night. These included the awards for best film, best direction, best script, best music as well as best feature film.
It was a triumphant night for the two leads, Rowan McNamara and Marissa Gibson, who also received the awards for best actor and actress. The two, who have no formal acting training, beat out film veterans and some of the biggest names in the business. These included Hugo Weaving (Last Ride), Frances O' Connor (Blessed), Anthony LaPaglia (Balibo) and Sacha Horler (My Year Without Sex). Gibson was unable to attend to event although McNamara was charmingly gauche when accepting his award on stage.
On winning the award for best music, surprised writer and director Warwick Thornton, who received the award together with producer Kath Shelper, quipped, "It's amazing what you can do with a garage band."
The movie, which was premiered at the Adelaide Film Festival this year, has also won the Camera d'Or at Cannes. It is set to screen on ABC TV this Sunday, and is one of the nominees for Best Foreign Language Film at the upcoming Oscars.
