A crowd numbering in the thousands crammed into the foyer of the Greater Union cinema in George Street. Hordes of screaming girls and a sprinkling of lads could hardly wait for the midnight screening of the long awaited follow-up to Twilight to begin.
The premiere of New Moon, the second installment in the Twilight saga, saw fans wearing their hearts on their sleeves. Twilight T-shirts abounded, including the obligatory "bite me". Others declared the wearer "would have picked Jacob" or that one was allowed to address an individual as "Mrs. Edward Cullen".
The audience was highly impressed with the movie's special effects. Fans that had travelled from as far as Hobart cited actors Taylor Lautner, who plays Jacob, and Robert Pattinson, who plays Edward, as two of the best parts in a thrilling film. Others like Antoinette Siciliano felt that Dakota Fanning was an exceptional standout as Jane, a member of the Volturi vampire royalty.
Unfortunately, the fervor was not universal. David Stratton opined that New Moon was a "fizzer" and completely underwhelming, a sentiment shared by movie critic Tim Robey. General consensus held that the much-anticipated movie failed in its attempt to evoke both romance and suspense, and its climax was "pitifully weak".
Some fans, too, compared the movie unfavorably to the book, with Sarah Wilkes feeling that the filmmaking failed to follow the book closely enough, which was evinced in a somewhat disjointed storytelling arc.
