Customs and Border Protection investigators have arrested and charged a 29-year-old Ballarat man for importing child pornography.
Customs search and seizure warrants were executed at a residential address in Ballarat yesterday (Friday 3 July) after DVDs containing child abuse images were intercepted at theMelbourne Gateway Facility on 19 June.
At the property, Customs and Border Protection investigators seized computer equipment which allegedly contains more than 200,000 child abuse images, as well as hundreds ofDVDs and books containing abhorrent pornography material.
The importation of child and abhorrent pornography is illegal under the Customs Act 1901.
Customs and Border Protection National Manager Investigations, Richard Janeczko, said importing child and abhorrent pornography materials is a serious crime.
"Customs and Border Protection takes its role in preventing the importation of such materials into Australia very seriously," he said.
"The materials seized by Customs and Border Protection in such cases depict the real victims of this crime the children used to make the images.
The maximum penalty for this type of offence is $275,000 and/or 10 years imprisonment.
