Gillibrand's appointment ends a two-month wait for a replacement for Clinton, who had previously said she would not relinquish her seat until she was confirmed as President Barack Obama's choice for Secretary of State.

Her appointment runs until a special election to take place on November 2010.

Gillibrand acknowledge she isn't a well known figure to many people in her state but said she would work hard for people in all the state, according to the New York Times.
