Nokia unveiled on October 2, 2008 its first touch-screen phone, priced well below Apple's iPhone model, as the world's top cellphone maker hopes to tap consumers for whom the iPhone has been too expensive. Nokia said it would begin selling the 5800 Xpressmusic model shortly, and will price it at 279 euros ($395), excluding subsidies and taxes. (Handout./Reuter...

The firm confirmed that its new phone will be available in India, Indonesia, the United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Russia and Spain by the end of this year.

The N 5800 will cost $387 before operator subsidies and taxes, a fee which is slightly lower than that of the iPhone.

Nokia entered a market for touch screen phones joining Apple, LG Electronics and Samsung Electronics.

Nokia's senior president of marketing, Jo Harlow said the N5800 has more features that are lacking in the iPhone citing an example of being able to support Adobe Flash multimedia technology which is not supported by the iPhone.

"We want to turn the user interface into a human interface," said Harlow.
