StumbleuponNEW YORK - Republican presidential candidate John McCain wants to suspend his campaign starting tomorrow and return to DC to work on building a consensus for a course of action to deal with the financial crisis.
He's asking that Friday night's debate with Barack Obama be postponed. McCain said he would only join the debate as scheduled if Congress reaches an agreement on the measure by Friday morning.
The unprecedented move by McCain apparently came after a Wednesday morning phone call with Obama about the financial crisis.
McCain will return to the capital to help work on the proposed $700 billion government bailout plan.
"It's time for both parties to come together to solve this problem," McCain, 72, said in a statement. "We must meet as Americans, not as Democrats or Republicans, and we must meet until this crisis is resolved."
The McCain campaign will suspend airing all ads and all campaign events pending an agreement with Obama, as well as planned fundraising activities.
He added that McCain would take part in the debate as scheduled if Congress reached agreement on the measure by Friday morning.
