Palin's Small Town Made Women Pay for Rape Exam

22 September 2008 @ 03:33 pm AEST

The state of Alaska required women to pay for their own rape examinations while Gov. Sarah Palin was mayor.

Former state Rep. Eric Croft, a Democrat, sponsored a state law requiring cities to provide the examinations free of charge to victims.

The only obstacle he faced was from Wasilla, where Palin was mayor from 1996 to 2002.

According to Amnesty International, a woman is raped every 6 minutes in the U.S.

Alaska's rape rate is 2.5 times that of the national average, the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence says. Alaska also has the highest rate per capita of men murdering women.

Ninety percent of Alaskans would vote to increase funding for victim service programs because, according to the coalition, "programs are in dire need of more funding in order to serve the sheer volume of victims."
