There are rising talks that Apple will be launching a next generation iPhone which will sport dual camera lenses which some calls as the "biggest camera jump ever." Daring Fireball's John Gruber squealed in a recent episode of The Talk Show podcast that the giant company is working on a two-lens system which will be the main selling point of the much speculated next gen iPhone, Apple Insider reports.

Apparently, the concept of having two cameras on the back of a smartphone is already captured by HTC's One M8 which has shipped earlier this year. With HTC's system, the second camera serves as a depth-sensing camera that is used by the phone's software to provide a selection of special effects.

Apple's attack on the other hand might be completely different than that of HTC. Based on Techspot's report, the rumoured iPhone version might have Sony's Exmor RS IMX230 stacked CMOS image sensor. This brings no surprise since Apple has used Sony sensors in the past with its older iPhones.

The tech giant could also possibly use the two-lens system being developed by Corephotonics. Their concept is to use two lenses at different focal lengths that can provide options of optical zooming. One camera will go for the wide shots while the other one will be used for close-ups. Corephotonics system also provides spatial data for 3D imagery with the help of its lens offset.

Since the release of iPhone 4 in 2011, Apple has already shipped an 8-megapixel rear camera with every iPhone models. The company has been known to be unwilling to compete in the megapixel race and has been focusing on other aspects of its camera system. Despite that, Apple managed to be on top of things with the over-all image quality and capabilities of its cameras.

Going back to Gruber's statement, the writer has an impressive track record and with his take on the speculated next generation iPhone, consumers have to see if such would materialize. With Apple's recent release of the iPhone and iPhone 6 Plus, the giant company has all the time to come up with such innovation and the possibility of an iPhone with DSLR-like cameras will definitely excite fans and avid users.
