The Apple Watch 2, the next smartwatch from Apple, just might be in for a massive redesign involving the addition of a second screen.

Instead of adding one more display alongside the main one, this radical change involves an improvement to the device's wrist strap. Apple has plans of developing a new, strap-based screen display, according to Digital Spy.

This Apple Watch 2 report surfaced online after it was discovered Apple filed a new patent. According to the designs sent to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the band of the upcoming Apple Watch 2 is going to be filled with light transmitting fibres.

These fibres will have to be woven into materials usually used for Apple's smartwatch. This new design will allow the device's strap to double as an additional screen. With one more screen, Apple Watch 2 users can have an easier view of any new notifications or message alerts.

This patent was actually filed on May 30, 2014. That said, consumers are convinced Apple is pretty much far along as regards to the development of the Apple Watch 2's second screen.

Although this new strap technology could be featured in the upcoming Apple Watch 2, it’s worth noting the patent doesn’t limit it only to the smartwatch. In fact, the filing also showed the material doubling as iPad and iPhone cables.

IDC, a research firm, has estimated that around 3.9 million units of the Apple Watch were shipped during the third quarter of 2015 ending on September 30. Once this information has been confirmed, Apple Watch sales would have accounted for 18 percent of the entire wearable device market, according to Stark Insider.
