After the successful run with the iPhone 6 series in 2014, Apple released the iPhone 6s series this September. The 6s lineup is an “improved version” of the original iPhone 6 carrying the same design philosophy.

Unlike the 6s series, the next-generation Apple iPhone 7 will offer top-of-the-shelf configurations similar to its Android-counterparts, said a new report says. The same report also gives an idea of how Samsung and Apple will perform with respect to sales in 2016.

The Apple iPhone 7 series will come with 3GB of RAM, unlike the current-generations iPhones based on an analysis published by the market research firm Trend Force. To top it off, the series will also have a waterproof exterior similar to the Sony Xperia Z lineup of devices. Not to forget, Sony is the pioneer in featuring the water- and dust-proof exteriors in the high-end version of its smartphones.

Moreover, Apple is believed to be working on a “Plus” variant of the iPhone 7. Going by the history of Apple, it’s quite possible that only the iPhone 7 Plus might feature the improved RAM configuration but not the flagship, GSM Arena clarifies. But then, both iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will reportedly sport waterproofed exteriors.

In addition to the standard displays, the tech giant is also working on a 4.0-inch display clad model. The 4.0-inch iPhone 7 release date has reportedly been pegged for the “second quarter” of 2016 between April and June, according to Trend Force.

The standard iPhone 7 models will apparently be released during the “second half” of next year. Nevertheless, readers are advised to take the reported iPhone 7 specifications and release date with the proverbial pinch of salt as Apple hasn’t confirmed any information thus far.

Meanwhile, if Trend Force’s prediction is right, Apple could be shipping 260 million iPhones in 2016. But then, Apple will apparently not be able to beat the rival Samsung’s shipments of about 310 million units, although the South Korean tech giant’s annual shipment is predicted to fall by four percent.
