Many people know that Anne Hathaway can get away with singing with her movie "Ella Enchanted" and her numerous Broadway spoofs at the Oscars as proof. But this time, the actress takes it seriously as she ventures on her most challenging role as Fantine in movie musicale "Les Misérables."

She chopped her hair in pixie style and then she belts out the classic "I Dreamed a Dream" against a gloomy background of a 19th century France. Anne Hathaway takes on the spotlight as Fantine, a French factory worker who is forced to cut and sell her hair and becomes a prostitute in order to survive.

On the preview of the movie, Anne was seen weeping as her locks were chopped off. Much to her dedication to the film and to her role, she is said to have gone through a 500-calorie diet.

The film is adapted from the famous stage show that has been seen by over 60 million people in 42 countries and 21 different languages.

"Les Misérables" is directed by the "King's Speech" Academy Awards winner Tom Hooper. It has a stellar cast which includes Hugh Jackman who plays ex prisoner Jean Valjean, Amanda Seyfried who plays Cosette, Fantine's daughter, Russell Crowe and Eddie Redmayne.

"Anne has been an extraordinary exponent of singing live. Her 'I Dreamed a Dream' is just jaw-dropping. It is so raw and heartfelt. It's done in a way you could never do in playback," Director Hooper said as he praised the actress.

Meanwhile, Jackman, who is no stranger to singing and Broadway, said that it was much easier to sing live rather than to sing along with a track. The Australian actor once famously opened the Oscar awards with himself doing Broadway together with Anne Hathaway.
