Android Pay can now be used to pay traffic fines in New South Wales. The NSW Government has tapped on the Google digital wallet platform so citizens can pay for government services more conveniently.

The contactless payment service for Android smartphones is available for all 64 of Service NSW centres across the state. According to Dominic Perrottet, minister for Finance, Services and Property, the agency chose Android Pay because of the popularity of Android phones.

“Around 90 percent of people now have a mobile phone, and with the popularity of Android phones, it makes sense for us to provide this quick, efficient option for our customers.

“Governments have traditionally been very slow on the uptake when it comes to new technology, whereas customers latch on much more quickly. With Service NSW, we are completely changing that – becoming fast followers – so that our customer service keeps pace with the options people want.”

Service NSW is the first Australian government agency to use the tap-to-pay service. Customers can use Google’s digital wallet app in paying traffic fines, vehicle registrations, driver’s licence renewals, and other services offered by NSW’s one-stop shop transaction portal.

For now, Android Pay is only accepted as over-the-counter payment option. Service NSW plans to bring the Google cashless payment service to the agency’s digital stores, website and app in the coming months.

Android Pay launched in Australia last month, with ANZ Banking Group the first of the big four banks to offer the service. As a digital mobile wallet, it can store credit cards, debit cards and loyalty cards on compatible Android smartphones.
