Android M is coming soon which includes several fixes and improvements based on Android Lollipop. Know if your Xperia smartphone or tablet has a chance to receive the next generation Android OS.

High End Smartphones And Tablets

It is expected that Sony Xperia Z3 Series will receive Android M later this year or early next year. In 2014, Sony Mobile announced that all Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 Compact and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact will be updated to Android Lollipop which has been done in March 2015 as part of the software upgrade plan.

Sony Xperia Z2, Xperia Z1 Compact and Xperia Z2 Tablet may or may not receive the upcoming Android M because of the 18-month software support followed by manufacturers. Xperia Z2 has been released in April 2014 with software support expiration on October 2015 while Xperia Z1 Compact will reach the expiration on July 2015 since it was launched in January 2014. Xperia Z2 Tablet support will expire on September 2014 based on its release date in March 2014. Sony Mobile can extend software support if desired.

Older Sony Xperia Z Devices

Users of older Sony Xperia Z devices such as Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Tablet Z are expecting for another major software update even though the support has expired already. These devices have been released in 2013 and supposedly ended the life cycle but Sony Mobile decided to reward owners by giving Android Lollipop. Right now, there is no confirmation yet if these devices will be extended up to Android M.

Mid-Range Devices And Other Models

Several Xperia smartphones are eligible to Android M software update in accordance to the 18-month software support. It includes mid-range and low-end smartphones:

- Xperia E4g and E4g Dual

- Xperia E4 and E4 Dual

- Xperia E3 and E3 Dual

- Xperia M2 and M2 Aqua

- Xperia C3 and C3 Dual

- Xperia T3

- Xperia T2 Ultra and T2 Ultra Dual

Of course, Sony Mobile has the right to decide which among these smartphones will receive Android Lollipop and Android M software update regardless of life cycle. Moreover, most Xperia devices released recently running Android Lollipop has higher chances to get Android M such as Xperia Z4, Xperia M4 Aqua and Xperia C4.
