Users of Motorola, Samsung and Sony smartphones can expect Android 5.0 L after the software development occurs upon the official release from Google. Several models will receive Project Volta, new Material Design UI, a new runtime and enhanced notifications.

Motorola Smartphones

Nexus 6 is the primary device from Motorola which runs Android 5.0 upon release according to the leaked specifications from GSMArena. But the company intends to release the same update to several Motorola smartphones including Moto X.

Few months ago, a Facebook account of Motorola Germany confirmed Android 5.0 update for Moto X and Moto G but it was discovered as a fake post and the company distanced itself from any claims. However, Motorola's Punit Soni did confirm the software for Moto X via Google+ by replying to a handler named Josh B.

Regardless of any information posted online, Motorola has not yet denied Moto X, Moto G and Moto E of any future update. Here are the details of eligibility on the three smartphones based on the official release date:

1. Moto X was released in August 2013 with eligibility of Android 5.0 until early 2015.

2. Moto G was released in November 2013 with eligibility of Android 5.0 until early 2015.

3. Moto E was released in May 2014 and remains eligible until 2015.

Of course, Moto X second generation planned to be released from September 2014 onwards is also upgradable to Android 5.0 L and another version after that. New Moto Droids including Droid Ultra, Droid Maxx and Droid Mini are also eligible for another major software release.

Samsung Galaxy Smartphones

Several Galaxy smartphones from Samsung are eligible to receive Android 5.0 and users can expect its rollout by late 2014 or early 2015 as the company is currently seeding the Android 4.4.4 KitKat update. Here are the most popular models from Samsung which should receive the new OS based on the official date:

- Galaxy S5 and its variants released in 2014

- Galaxy S5 Mini

- Galaxy Note 3 Neo released in 2014

- Galaxy Note 3 remains eligible until 2015

- Galaxy S4 and its variants are still eligible with Samsung's discretion

- Galaxy S4 Mini

- Galaxy Grand 2 and Grand Neo

- Galaxy J

- Galaxy Mega 5.8 and 6.3 models under Samsung's discretion

Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 are likely ineligible to another major upgrade after Android KitKat but users of Galaxy S3 Neo and S3 Slim are definitely eligible for Android 5.0. Mid-range devices such as Galaxy Ace 4 and Galaxy Core 2 are expected to be upgraded due to the remaining software support duration.

Sony Xperia Smartphones

Sony Mobile recently confirmed software support status on different Xperia smartphones. Based on their updates, latest Xperia Z devices are likely the first to receive Android 5.0 L update.

1. Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact

2. Xperia Z2, Z2a and Xperia Z1 Compact

3. Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1s and Xperia Z Ultra

4. Xperia C3, Xperia E3, Xperia T3, Xperia M2 and Xperia T2 Ultra

Older Xperia Z devices including Xperia ZR and Xperia ZL remains uncertain regarding eligibility for Android 5.0 update. Xperia Z was released in February 2013 which already reached end of life cycle in August 2014 but Xperia ZR remains eligible for Android 5.0 until January 2015.

Sony will decide soon if another major upgrade is planned for older Xperia Z models. In addition to the list mentioned above, several Sony Xperia smartphones have been removed on Android KitKat upgrade plans including Xperia SP, Xperia M, Xperia C, Xperia L, Xperia T/TX and Xperia V.
