The Amityville horror house up for sale again

The infamous “Amityville horror” house is for sale again. The two-storey Dutch Colonial-style house in New York is cursed with an unfortunate haunted history and is listed for US$850,000 (AU$1.2 million).

“There’ve been four owners since the murders, and none of them ran out of the house screaming, and there were no strange experiences [such as murder],” the brokers said of the house (via Curbed).

The house was listed for US$1.15 million (AU$1.6 million) in 2010. It was last sold in 1997 for US$310,000 (AU$420,000), and the homeowners apparently did not experience anything creepy while living there.

The famous haunted house is easily recognised by horror book and film fans around the world. The house, which sits on the Amityville River, is where Ronald DeFeo Jr killed his father, mother, two brothers and two sisters in 1974.

A year later, the house was sold to George and Kathleen Lutz and their three children. According to the 1977 “The Amityville Horror” book by author Jay Anson, the family began experiencing paranormal activities inside the house.

George apparently would wake up every 3:15 in the morning, which he learnt later was the estimated time of the DeFeo murders. Kathleen also experienced nightmares about the killings, while the children began sleeping on their stomachs, which was the same way the DeFeo family’s dead bodies were found. The book also detailed many other chilling experiences the family suffered from while living in the house. The Lutz family left the house after a month.

Anson’s book was the basis of a series of horror films from 1979 to as recent as 2013. The Amityville house is also featured in the plot of “The Conjuring 2.”

The house was built in 1927 and includes a large boat house and boat slip and two-car garage. The address was changed from 112 Ocean Avenue to 108 Ocean Avenue, Amityville, NY, since the popularity of the films took off. More information can be found on the broker’s page.
