American Idol's Final Three took on three songs in three rounds Wednesday night. The first round is the judge's choice, second round is contestant's choice, and the last round is resident mentor Jimmy Iovine's choice.

Phillip Phillips won two-thirds of the judges' vote after the first round. Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler were with him, while Randy Jackson thought Joshua Ledet had a slight edge over the two other finalists.

Randy picked Etta James "I'd Rather Go Blind" for Joshua Ledet, Jennifer asked Jessica to sing Mariah Carey's "My All," and Steven picked "Beggin'" by Madcon for Phillip. The judges made good choices in pulling out singing style, tenderness and melody from the Final Three.

For the second round, the contestants dished out their personal choices.

Joshua covered John Lennon's "Imagine," which is another classic. Jennifer pointed out he showed control in this performance. She thinks it is hard for Joshua to pull back, but when he does, the performance works out great.

Jessica went for another ballad, with Aerosmith's "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing." Steven was evidently moved by her rendition.

"You just took a great song and made it greater. Thank you," he told the aspiring diva.

Phillip chose Matchbox 20's "Disease," which echoes the lyrics of "Volcano" from last week's show. The judges all agreed there was something lacking in his performance. Randy said his choice was weird and added, "You can do those in your sleep."

The last round of the show featured songs chosen by music producer and mentor Jimmy Iovine. From Jimmy's perspective, the audience took a peek at the kind of records the Final Three could do after the competition.

Joshua got more contemporary with "No More Drama" by Mary J. Blige. His rendition was way over the top and he got totally carried away by the music. Jennifer thought it was exciting. "You have this perfect marriage of knowing exactly what you're doing and letting completely go at the same time," she told him.

Jessica was given a youthful song, "I'll Be There" by the Jackson 5. Jimmy has said in the past that he wished he could've steered Jessica into singing songs that would not make her sound old. By the end of the performance, two judges said her voice was "perfect." Randy was the only one who didn't like it so much. "There was never a 'moment' moment," he said.

Phillip got Bob Seger's "We've Got Tonight," and the audience saw his father was thrilled by the assigned song. The audience cheered wildly as soon as Phillip delivered the first line, "I know it's late..." Jennifer said there were 20 million girls swooning over Phillip out there. Randy got the "moment" he was talking about. "The perfect song at the perfect time, and your best performance on the show ever," Randy said.

After three rounds in one night, who earned the chance to be crowned the season's American Idol next week?

The prediction here is that it will all come down to Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez. Joshua Ledet may be the most celebrated contestant by the judges, but his vocal acrobats and "singing in tongues" do not work well with many people.

The other two, meanwhile, managed to deliver powerful songs and connect to their audience at the same time.
