On the 20th anniversary of E. Whitten Legends game on Tuesday, comedian Russell Gilbert made a memorable goal — by infiltrating the opposing team.

During the final quarter of the game, the ball kicked by rookie player Stephen Gilham of Victoria was caught by retired rules footballer Shaun Smith from the other team. Smith thought he was passing it to a defence teammate when actually he passed it to offence team member Gilbert. When he caught the ball, Gilbert was wearing a red All-Stars jersey, which he immediately ripped to show his blue Victoria uniform underneath.

The EJ Whitten Legends Games is a charity event and a tribute to “Mr Footballer” EJ Whitten, who died in 1995 due to prostate cancer. Its purpose is to honour the late Whitten and raise awareness about prostate cancer or men’s health in general. Teams Victoria and All-Stars, which represent the rest of Australia, are composed of retired Aussie football players, rookies and non-footballing celebrities and personalities

This year Victoria was headed by coach Sam Kekovich and Captain Matthew Lloyd, while All-Stars was led by coach Mark Williams and Captain Shane Crawford. All-Stars were the first to score with Paul Hudson’s goal. This was immediately evened with the help of Sav Rocca from the Vics. By half time, the score stood as follows: All-Stars 6/3 (39) to Victoria’s 1/3/4 (31).

By the third quarter, the Vics tried their best to catch up but when the buzzer sounded, All-Stars got a good 12 points over them. During the fourth quarter, the game was interrupted by a streaker: a 23-year-old Dromana man as identified by a Victorian Police spokesperson, according to the Herald Sun. The games resumed, and the next highlight was Gilbert’s sneaky goal. The game ended with the All-Stars’s victory with a lead of 24 points.

With the EJ Whitten Legends Game being a charity event, the games rules were more lax than usual, allowing for entertaining tactics from the players. This was not the first time the comedian pulled a trick in order to score a goal. Back in 2002, Gilbert was benched when the players on the field approached his side. Unable to resist the temptation of the oncoming ball, he got off the bench, joined the melee and scored a goal for his team.
