Aldi announced that its biggest sale day of the year in Australia is happening on May 20. The event appeals to several shoppers primarily because of the savings that come with it, with items available for as low as $6.99.

The German retailer’s sale event takes place annually since 2008. Huge bargains on ski clothing, boots, thermal wear and goggles are being offered.

Ski jackets and pants, for example, are available for less than $70 each. Aldi, which is mainly a food and grocery store, told news.com.au that it makes up only a small portion of bargains.

The retailer’s first day of sale last year has seen disorganized scenes in stores across Australia. It only took two weeks for the entire range of snow gears to be sold out.

Aldi chief executive Jason Hart reportedly shared that the retailer’s internal studies show its prices are 21 percent lower compared to its rivals, including Wal-Mart Stores Inc. Hindustan Times reported he was looking to maintain the gap moving forward.

According to its website, Aldi is synonymous with high quality and exceptional value. It stresses that the goal of the company is to provide a wide range of grocery products at incredibly low prices. Aldi has more than 7,000 stores in three continents.

Ross Elliott, owner of Snowgum, said it was Aldi that introduced the hobby of skiing to more people who previously might not have considered it due to the cost. Snowgum is an outdoor clothing, footwear and camping equipment retailer.

“What I see up at ski resorts, at weekends and day trips, is people wearing more appropriate clothing now than they would have 10 years ago,” he told The Australian. He believes such type of clothing has become more accessible now that people can shop at Aldi, adding they do not see any negative impact on their sales.

Elliott said families that wish to go with their kids at the snow at least once a year will purchase a more affordable product at Aldi. The inexpensive clothing, he said, gave families a chance to enjoy the snow.

Aldi started operation in the country in 2001. It has more than 400 stores in Australia and employs more than 9000 people. Moreover, its customers can use the ALDImobile Smartphone app, which is available for Android and iPhone, to manage ALDImobile services.
