Mixing game genres can be tricky, especially when they’re so different from each other. While an RPG can easily blend with an action game or a strategy game, it seems almost impossible to mix an action game with real time strategy elements. “AirMech Arena” will try to defy the odds by mixing said genres and adding a free-to-play module as it leaps from the Xbox 360 to modern consoles.

This re-release of “AirMech Arena” will be coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One this spring as announced by Polygon. The game will be published by Ubisoft and was developed by Carbon Games.

“AirMech Arena” will have players controlling nine different “AirMechs” that can transform between an aircraft and an imposing robot. Think Starscream from the “Transformers” franchise, but multiple variations of him. Of course, given that the game will have RTS elements, players will not be limited to shooting down enemies as they can also build armies with over 60 units to choose from.

As a free-to-play game, “AirMech Arena” will have a variety of modes to choose from. A single player mode is available as well as several forms of multiplayer, including four-player co-op and three on three competitive battles. Two friends can also take on each other in one-on-one combat between the mechs and their armies.

According to Eurogamer, several developers in Carbon Games worked on the PlayStation exclusive game “Fat Princess,” which bears a few similarities to “AirMech Arena.” Both games are a unique mix between action and strategy, but whereas “Fat Princess” was more of a capture the flag affair with a fat princess, “AirMech Arena” will be more focused on dominating enemies and eliminating the opposing army.

Before coming out on the Xbox 360, the game first found life on computers and was simply called “AirMech.” Eventually, the game was ported over to the Xbox 360 in 2014 and was given the new title “AirMech Arena.” The Xbox 360 version of the game currently has an overall of 73 on Metacritic, with several critics praising the game while also finding problems with the servers at the time.
